Hi Dolls! Have you been missing the Inspiration Workshop posts?? Me too!! Miss Gussy has moved to a more streamlined once a month Inspiration Workshop...which is completely understandable. I think starting this week, I shall try to post something inspiring every Thursday....but I need your help! Can you please make suggestions on what you would like to see?? I'd be happy to post whatever you would like! Just leave a comment with your suggestion ;)

This month's Gussy Sews Inspiration workshop prompt is {Organization} Gasp!! I am not the most organized person-- If you saw the studio on some day...even with the shop not open.....you would think I was a hoarder! {although there really is no such thing as hoarding when it comes to fabric, right??} My current organization issue is jewelry. I am making Mr. H INSANE with my jewelry covering every surface in our bedroom!

I have been scouring pinterest and the net for ideas to help me make a plan---- I have found a few but honestly, most are for people who do not have a {slight} jewelry obsession like myself. Option one is to covert an armoire to a giant jewelry box.... sort of like in the photo above. I have A LOT to organize. There are two corners in our bedroom room that I could use as my jewelry dept....planning on only using one of them... My other option is just loads of wall hooks and saturating the whole corner with the jewelry...sort of like this--

An update on my "it" factor! I think I am getting cooler by the minute! And clearly less annoying- in a maj way!

Not sure if you know this-- you may remember my post a while back--but Mr. H drives a giant black Caddy. A DTS! The big one! It's like a hotel room on wheels, it's so big. He is obsessed with it, calls it the cream puff and washes it every weekend. Well, last Friday night I downloaded this song onto my phone.

Popped it on in the cream puff - loooouuuuuuddd baby! And picked the girls up from dance class...you know, the dance class where everyone stands outside when they are done and their parents just valet up to get them. Bass pumpin' and I'm rockin' out in the cream puff! Yeah, baby! The girls ~~were horrified by~~ loved me and my Lady Gaga! I was double fab with my country version of Born this Way...right?? Fo' sho'!
AND I just discovered that Sugarland and Lady Gaga performed together! Oh MY! I am beyond obsessed with Jennifer Nettles-- she is just the coolest gal eva'! And I'm cool too, because most moms would have no clue that Lady Gaga and Sugarland make a great team!

I am turning into my dad more and more every day! Love you daddy!

Find a bunch of rocks, paint hearts on them along and scatter them around town for others to find. The girls and I will for sure be doing this. I'm actually thinking about doing this as a fun Saturday afternoon activity for the girls and their friends...or possibly as a classroom activity. I would also like to add inspirational messages on the back of the rocks...maybe via paint pens. It will be nice for them to spend some time focusing on inspirational quotes.
Here are a few I could work into the mix:
Do all things with love
Do all things with kindness
There is nothing better than the encouragement of a good friend
Constant kindness can accomplish much.
Why give in to rudeness when you can fight back with kindness
When you are kind to someone in trouble, you hope they'll remember and be kind to someone else. And it'll become like a wildfire.
Rudeness is the weak persons imitation of strength. (do you think 5th graders would get that, because I have to tell you, this is the epitome of some of them!!)

Anyway, would you not DIE over this love sign? Ohhhhhhh dreamy! It's one of those things I would see from a distance at the flea market, my heart would skip a beat, I would walk my fastest-but-not-so-fast-as-to-tip-the-vendor-off-that-I-MUST-HAVE-THIS walk, ask how much (not even hear what they guy says) and proclaim "I'll take it." I would wrap it up, take it home and try to justify to my one true love why this was a "needs it" purchase and why needs to be hung in our bedroom. Yes I would!

I haven't been to the flea markets in quite some time and am feeling all empty inside.... so I think the game is back on! Can't wait!! Hopefully I'll have some 'love' inspired finds to share over the next few weeks. I have been pinning away on my Holiday pinterest board so head on over and check it out if you have some time....or even if you don't have the time! lol. What I Wore Wedensday...it's apparently not as cool as I thought!

Apparently I am not as cool as I think I am. I was running around yesterday in my cute little outfit with what I deem to be the most fabulous bag around!

Clutch- Gardenhouse! Handmade Chic!! Fabrics are Paula Prass Botanika and some random cut velvet I found downtown.

I picked the girls up from school and just after greeting me with a fleeting "Hi" Olivia looks at my fab new clutch sitting in the passenger seat and says "Oh my gosh! What is that??" "It's my new bag. Do you like it?"Liv shrugglingly replies "It's pretty but it's huuuuggeee" I say "Oversized, baby. Isn't it fab?"
That of course was met with a swift eye roll and this response "Today, we had to define the word fabulous. I defined it as 'a word my mom annoyingly shortens to FAB and uses all the time' Then my friend and I started talking about how we think it is annoying when our moms try to be cool. And mom, it's really annoying when you shorten all your words." To which I responded "Whatevs'!" ha ha ha! Another eye roll! Life is good! It's funny!

On a completely polar opposite note, last week, I worked in Avery's class and came straight from the gym-- and let me preface this by saying I don't sweat too much and always dress cute for the gym so I look presentable walking out of there. As I walked into Avery's class, her jaw dropped, she came running over to me and said "OMG, mom. I can't believe you are in your gym clothes!" She took that photo above of me yesterday and also took this one...

I asked why she took a pic of just my shoes and she said "Because I know you love your shoes" I'm glad one of my offspring still finds me amusing, fun and fashionable!

So I'll still be rocking out that oversized clutch around town today...along with a totes (totally) adorbs (adorable) outfit.... and if I feel like swapping out bags, well this one is large enough to put a 16" square pillow in and toss on the couch....or start a pillow fight with one pre-teen who seems to think she would rather have a less stylish and less fun mom! Whatevs'! *wink wink.*

Annnnnd, I just got a call from the school nurse that my Olivia was "accidentally tripped" at lunch and is pretty scraped up. She was bandaged up and sent back to class. There is a boy at school who has had a crush on her for a long time, he finds it amusing to throw balls at her head when they are playing games. I've pretty much had enough of his behavior. IF it was him that "accidentally tripped" her I'll be marching my oh-so-stylish designer heels right up to his front door and giving him a not so abbveriated, not so shortened, not so fab tongue lashing.So yes, I guess I can be "not cool, too!" Because, you see, those girls of mine are TDF, and I will do anything for them...other than stop talking like a valley girl ;) Haaaaa, I crack myself up!

Mom of the year!

Miss A was sick on and off last week and after her fever spiked on Friday night, I took her to the doctor on Saturday morning. She has walking pneumonia and you could literally hear her little lungs crackling as she took a deep breath! Wowza! Yep, mom of the year here!! I had no idea until Friday night-- I honestly just thought she had a nasty cold. Anyway, she has been on antibiotics and is well on her way to a full recovery, thank goodness! Tomorrow, she'll be off to school for at least half the day. I am wondering how much just a half day will wipe her out. We'll see....

Anyway, this has rendered me home for the last few days. Finishing up projects around the house and making a few things. I have been lounging in sweats and really enjoying that...gahhhh what is wrong with me?? I am usually not a fan of sweats! I did add a few embellishments to my cozies and once it is in tutorial form, I'll share them with you. We have also spray painted one of Avery's dress forms and painted another in a metallic flame stitch type pattern. I'll share photos of those when they are aired out and back in her room. Yes, I did allow Miss A to help with these projects....I'm sure the fumes certainly helped clear her lungs.... mom of the year! That's me! I also got Avery's gallery wall completed in her room.

We are just waiting on one print from Cozamia to pop in that 8x10 frame and we'll be all set there! Her headboard is still waiting.....for some reason it seems so daunting. I know it will end up not being that bad but I have chosen to do the smaller projects first. Sometimes that make me feel like I have accomplished more :) Silly ha?? This afternoon we're going on a hunt for a lampshade - which will mean my bribing Avery with frozen yogurt or something. What's that?? Yes, yes I am mom of the year! Thank you for asking!

Bags are a big deal around here and I guess that is to be expected with three females in the house-- one who particularly loves designing bags! Have you missed Gardenhouse bags? I was looking through blog posts from eons ago and I think every other entry was a bag-- sort of miss that! The bag is back today...and I have a weekend of sewing ahead so hopefully I'll have more bag and sewing posts to come!

Do you love this hobo? The bottom is an INSANE silk cut velvet in avocado and turquoise-- this is a real stretch for me as this fabric retails for over $100 a yard!!! The ribbon is a french vintage woven jacquard and the quilting weight fabrics are of course Jennifer's - it's all so lush! Have you seen Jennifer's new line, Crazy Love? It's another line that will so easily be able to hold it's own when paired with statement making trims and fabrics. I'm literally sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for Crazy Love to hit stores! I think Jennifer and I are made from the same cloth.....that gal can do no wrong in my book!

Oh and her new line also fits amazingly well into J. Crews Spring looks...no? I think we should all make a pencil skirt and a pair of shorts out of this line! Pair with a stripe top, leopard print shoes....WORK it! Mixing prints is HUGE for 2012!

Do you remember a while back I had mentioned that I had the urge to paint? Not paint as in paint a room, but paint as in art. Well, a few weeks ago I found this fantastic art set that one of the kids had that was pretty much untouched and it has been sitting there beckoning me to do something with it. Since Avery was sick this week, I decided to pull it out and have a little relaxed fun with her. She and I had a fabulous time painting. I think the fact that it is hard to tell which ones are mine and which ones are hers speaks to the fact that I should really stick to sewing. ;)

Although, I could get used to this....

I've been doing a lot of "stopping to smell the roses" lately and I have to say I am really enjoying it. I feel centered and am craving quiet time with less chaos, fewer distractions and meaningful time spent with people I love. It's interesting to me as it seems a little out of character for me to want down time, but I'm just going with it. Evolving, I think! I have a stack of books to read too.. and a journal with one page full! lol. I'd love to have a creative journal full of all the inspiring things I read....but that means I will probably never get through a single book, because a page read would lead to a journal entry, a little picture to color or paint and then that would spur some sort of sewing project.....ahh ha! There I am! Still me, just a little more evolved.
ps- Do any of you have any great book suggestions?

I can't imagine any local craft store having enough white feathers to cover one. What do you think? I might have to delve into this one....maybe it will be a slow project-- over time-- Because I think I might lose my mind sitting there gluing feathers...and I'm bad with the glue gun. I'm sure I'll be full of blisters when all is said and done. But I think it will be worth it! I'll add that one to the list....

Don't you love one outfit that is so versatile it can go any way the wind blows? Since I am on the hunt to make-over a friends wardrobe...and one who has no idea how clothing really works for us....I thought it would be a good idea to focus on very versatile pieces so she doesn't have to put too much thought into it as well as not be stuck in the "outfit box." The girls are home after a long stay up at my parents and they are back to school tomorrow. This morning I am unpacking them, doing some laundry and some random errands to get us organized for the week
but before I head out, I wanted to share with you the finished product from my slip-covering escapade early last week. Two slipper chairs, in a grey sort of leopard dalmatian print nubby linen. I am LOVING these! Brian is loving that they are out of his garage after a 6 month stay in the holding pen before they were pretty enough to be invited in. Ha! Little does he know it just makes more room for something else ;)

Also, happy to report that Avery's room is coming together nicely! The pink walls are TDF! I'm going to be doing a fabric covered headboard in the same fabric I used for the chair slipcovers and will post photos as I go along with that. I'm also planning on torturing myself by painting an old dresser she has to look like this.....

I've been knee deep in pink paint in Avery's room for the last 24 hours and still have another 24 ahead!! I think painting is like labor-- you forget how "not fun" it is when you see the beautiful finished product! The pink is perfect-- and the fun begins when the painting is finished. The girls are spending the last full week of their winter break up at my parents place....which has freed up my time as you can image! Monday I spent a good portion of the day reading magazines and.....pinning, of course! Brian and I sat down to dinner and he asked what I had done during the day, with such an empty house.....I sort of chuckled...because I so rarely don't do much of anything. Walking the dogs was my main accomplishment for the day! Oh and I was a pinning queeeennnnn!! I found and ordered quite a few prints for Avery's room as well as for my gallery wall which I will be re-working in the near future.

She is a graphic designer and illustrator and her work is fantastic!! Love it! I'll be tuning in to her blog daily for a little eye candy. All of this is inspiring me to do a little painting! Could be fun.......and what more do I have to do this week anyway?? Oh, yeah, paint Avery's room....was hoping for a little more creative painting... but it'll have to do for now. The babydoll is expecting to return home to a pink bedroom!

One of my best friends has lost a significant amount of weight recently and has asked me to make-over her wardrobe. I could not be more excited! It's for sure going to be a lot of work as Cindy is one of those "you can lead a horse to water" types. I am literally going to have to spell everything out for her. I found this "How to Wear Jeans" tidbit that I find so great I had to share it with all of you! Now that just leaves me to explain to Cindy the difference between, boyfriend, skinny, and high waisted flair-- although she does know what the f-me pumps are! lol.

I'm so excited about {Bespoke} being one of 2012's fashion trends! The thought of handmade and one of a kind really making it's way to the forefront of fashion makes my heart sing - there has always been couture: custom made and made by hand clothing, but homemade has always seemed to have a different undertone. I love to see that times are changing! This morning I found a fantastic tutorial to embellish ballet flats. Do you remember seeing these at Anthropologie?

Stacey at Stars for Streetlights did a fabulous tutorial on how to make a pair of these using scarves and ballet flats-- how fabulous to be able to personalize a pair of shoes you already have, or even a pair that you buy specifically for this purpose. Customizing your own shoes?? Yes, please!!
Her tutorial is very well written and looks pretty easy if you have even basic sewing skills. If you would prefer to glue the scarf strips on to the shoe I would suggest using an epoxy glue or even E6000. If you need a little help getting started, here are some shoes choice along with vintage scarves that would work amazingly well with this project.

Etsy has a plethora of vintage scarves to choose from and 6pm.com always has more ballet flats than necessary! Enjoy! Happy bespoking your shoes!

You know me and my fabric obsession! I've been having a hard time not buying and persuing new fabrics. I mean it's even on the TV! Maybe this was the universe talking to me....yeah, I think it was. I was watching the Today show last week while I was getting ready for the day (and by that I mean sitting on Pinterest and drinking coffee at 8am!!) They had one of the editors of Daily Candy on the show and she was talking about the fashion trends of 2012. The first was patterns-- mixing patterns specifically-- YAY!! The next was Old Hollywood Glamour (must be due to the Marilyn Movie that is coming out) Love that look....but what really got my attention was the third trend ...bespoke. Meaning do your own thing, a DIY approach to fashion, incuding a site where you can make your own make up and another where you can make your own fabric.

Girls Day

We are spoiled, we really are! Yesterday a friend and I took our girls down to Venice Beach for the day...since, you know, it's been 80 degrees here for the past few days. Our plan was to rent bikes and ride from Venice to Santa Monica along the beach path, grab a bite to eat, ride back, hit Cold Stone and then head home.

As we were riding, working up our appetites one of the girls said "can we go to The Penthouse for lunch?" Her dad does some work for The Huntley Hotel so she is quite familiar with the place! Since she was the birthday girl, who were we to tell her no? So pedaling a bit quicker we headed north-- And by a bit quicker I really mean a bit-- Avery and I opted for the tandem because our beach bike rides on separate bikes are usually filled with me yelling at her to watch where she is going! That girls loves to look a round-- everywhere but in front of her!! She walked into the back of a parked car a while back-- seriously! So we lumbered along-- me pedaling, her flailing her arms and legs around, making the girls behind her laugh.

I have to say the work was worth it. The Huntley is TDF!! Despite the amazing restaurant on the top floor, the lobby decor is beyond! It is the epitome of a privately owned boutique hotel. I could have moved into the bathroom in the restaurant - it had stacked quartz walls-- yes, it's that sort of chic. All the booths in the restaurant have sheer curtains in between them. Crisp white leather, fur pillows, gorgeous chandeliers and then a dash of rustic with croc embossed wing chairs and super modern wooden chairs. You should check out the virtual tour here.
Today is going to be equally as fabulous outside. Not sure what we are going to do....but I'm sure I need a work out in the form of a bike ride...and have you seen the Viceory Hotel in Santa Monica?? :)

I'm so excited for the New Year-- even Tuesday feels like Monday! Today I'm working on slipcovers for some slipper chairs I have had sitting around for a few months. They are a super ugly worn blue velvet and I'm ready to give them a punch of chic! (And I also need to get these chairs in the house as I've found new ones that I can't stop thinking about and they neeeeed to come home with me. But don't tell Mr. H as he is getting used to having more space in the garage :) Poor guy!

It's another gorgeous day so I'm planning on something outside with the girls too....not sure what yet though. I'm also mentally planning on how to re-work our front door table decor. I want something that I can keep through the summer. Maybe a sunburst mirror? And a few plants that I don't have to water! If there is such a thing.....

And I do plan to blog more.....need to get back into the habit of it. I miss it...between not making bags and not blogging, I have been feeling a bit lost at times (and sometimes not-- gosh I am just a pool of contradictions lately! I'm driving myself insane!) -- although I do end up finding something to occupy my time (which this morning has been refereeing the girls!! One wants the other one to turn her computer down because the baby crying on it is unbearable. Someday they will learn to not sweat the small stuff!)

Well hello there! Today is the first day of winter break for the girls-- which means my days of planning and hosting class parties, dance parties, teacher gifts and the like are officially over! Yay!!

This morning, I decided I would just lounge around for an hour ...or two.... and indulge in looking through a book I have had for a while but have not had the chance to really absorb. Food Fashion Friends by Fleur Wood is pure delight. {If you are needing a last minute gift, dash on over to Amazon and grab one.} The back of the book reads "Cookbook, style guide and photographic tour de force, this is a gloriously indulgent celebration of the pleasures of frocking up, decking out and cooking up a storm" Well that pretty much sums it it. It is delish - complete eye candy! I wish I could say I have a favorite part but I don't, I honestly love it all! The styling, the photography the recipes...all spot on! The book has style ideas, menu and playlists {love!} for nine different celebrations from a childrens birthday party to a swank dinner party. If you'd like to get a taste of Fleur Wood, who is actually an amazing designer, swing by her blog. It's just as delightful as her book!

Designers Challenge

Designing for my girls two can have it's challenges, and I am sure it is going to be even harder as they get older and more opinionated! All I can do is pile on the Elle Decor, Teen Vogue, Anthro catalogs and design books and hope for the best!! Once in a while they let their mom have free reign over their outfits - which usually means they have been bribed in some manner! Fashion bribes are 110% acceptable!

Even though Olivia is still in her jeans, a top and a hoodie fashion bubble, I try every morning to get her to wear something else. I don't get mad that she ends up in a different pair of jeans, different top and different hoodie every day (and converse-- breaks my heart! lol) life would be rough and loooong if I did. She's allowed to wear what she wants. She is starting to mix in a few different things here and there so I'll take what I can get. Fortunately, she was rather easy when it came to re-decorating her room and she loves the finished product! There are still a few finishing touches that need to go in -- I have yet to find the perfect yellow lamp as well as some storage bins for under her bed. But over all I'm pretty please with the result. Liv still wants a chandelier of some sort but we'll have to see about that....I'm not sure where to put it-- she has a fan in the middle of her room and we cannot live without that in the super hot summer months.

She LOVES her bed! And her peace sign art behind it (Gotta' give the girls some space to be herself, ya know?) Her and a girlfriend tented her bed last weekend. They had such a blast!

The William Wegman Fashion Dogs prints that we framed are so her! Do you spy a little Jonathan Adler Happy Chic? Have got to start them early on the right path!

I love her slip covered chair...she does too...but of course she wishes I would have added a little zebra in there! I just couldn't bring myself to add zebra to imperial trellis - I think I would have done it if it were brown zebra, but she wanted black. I may or may not have claimed ignorance on that one..... :) By the way, this slipcover put me in my place!! I thought I would just breeze through it footloose and fancy free all sewing-genius like.... Not so much!! Ended up having to make a pattern!

Her desk is pure fun and adds an unexpected pop of yellow.

And don't go thinking her room looks like this all the time....I just shuffled the pile around so it would be out of the way for each photo!

What I Wore Wednesday

What I wore today-- for a trip downtown and to Avery's holiday performance at school!

A cream mohair-ish cowl neck sweater with a TDF vintage (very vintage) brooch pinned to it-- got loads of compliments-- brooches are like cuff links-- neeeeeed to come back in style! Isn't it amazing how one little piece of jewelry can take an outfit from ho-hum to the next level?? I have to admit that I rarely wear a brooch on my body-- but almost always on a bag. I'll absolutely be working brooches into my outfits now.....loved wearing it!

I wore this with skinny jeans and brown patchwork leather ankle boots that have the sweetest modern heel! One of those boots that could have absolutely gone south if it weren't for a perfectly sculpted heel... I WISH I would have taken a photo of the shoes during good daylight hours...maybe I'll snap one in the morning and add it to this post. {and here ya' go!!}

A little note on my trip downtown. I went down to pick up a few things from American Apparel and to get one specific fabric that I have been eyeing for a home decor project. I have to say it was the STRANGEST thing to be down there surrounded by gorgeous trim and fabrics and not buy anything for impending bags. So crazy! It was invigorating to be downtown none the less-- I love the energy down there...and Men In Black 3 was filming behind the America Apparel Warehouse so that is always fun to see.

Glampout!

I spent last week catching up after being out of town and returning home to a pretty large plumbing leak -- shuffing plumbers, water dry out guys and drywall people -- not so much fun! Then planning Miss A's birthday party at the end of the week so I was really ready to hit the ground running this week. Armed with a list and schedule, I was on my way out the door when the phone rang. Man down!! Avery was not feeling well and needed to be picked up from school, the little monkey has a nasty tummy bug! Sooooo, my list sits and I'm home! But on the bright side I got most of my Christmas shopping done online yesterday and last night and am having most of it shipped up to my parents house so it will be waiting when we get there. I had a blast shopping for cuff links for my dad last night. Cufflinks are so chic it's a shame more men don't wear them. And don't worry, I wont be ruining any surprises, he asked me to get him cuff links-- he just doesn't know which ones, so I won't spoil the surprise.

Anyway, back to the weekend. Avery's party was a complete BLAST! 10 girls came over for a Glamp-out. Half camping, half glam. We started the party out by making flower brooches. Avery and I spent some time making yarn pom-poms and chiffon flowers and I set those out with loads of vintage cabachons, colorful feathers and buttons galore and the girls had the BEST time making the brooches.

Each girl got a felt circle and could glue on whatever they wanted. We used Alenes tacky glue-- the turbo one-- and it dried really quickly-- like within minutes. I then hot glued brooch pins to the back of them and gave the girls wool hats to pin them to. They were all soooo cute! We did nails, had cake and then walked up to Christmas Tree lane to look at the Chrsitmas lights. We came home to a blazing fire pit, made smore's and hung out in Gardenhouse tents. The girls all loved it! {I wish I had better photos but I am a terrible indoor photographer-- one of my goals for this next year is to master photography!}It was such an easy party and all the girls are so sweet and kind to one another. Miss A had a blast! She has great friends-- I think it is because she is so kind and caring and funny....and she's kinda' cute too! But then I AM biased!

Over the last few years, I have leaned toward decorating with only white and metallics and greenery-- although the photos above are killing me to work in a little pink.... Maybe in Liv's room?? I sort of feel like less is more with the holiday decor this year. This is so unusual for me....maybe it's because Christmas is just over two weeks away and it just seems like so much to put up to just have to tear it down three weeks later.....maybe I'll change my mind once I start in on it. I did order our Christmas cards this morning so I am feeling at least a bit festive.....hang on...let me pop some Christmas Music on........ Ahhh yes. Better.

I will be keeping our decor vintage polished chic and paired down....but not enough to be noticeable to the girls, of course. I love the thought of little stacks of packages around the house. The wrapping of gifts, to me, is just as important as the gift itself. I almost always add a little bauble to a bow-- and am dying over a tassel or maybe a few feathers this year!

What I Wore Wednesday

The weather has been fabulous here-- sunny, blue skies and in the 50's every day. A light sweater will do the trick most days-- that puts me in a great mood! We were in NY for a wedding last week and arrived home late on Sunday after MANY delays in travel. I have to admit I spent the last two days in sweats-- trying to get the house back together after being gone for a week and catching up on laundry. Today I felt much more back in the groove and actually got dresses! I wore skinny jeans, boots with a very tall heel, a black and white chiffon top with a pink pebbled leather belt and a grey cardi. And of course a vintage bauble..... Avon necklace from the 60's.

This top is fast becoming one of my faves - I bought it at Target a few months back and have already gotten a ton of wear out of it-- I'm not one who repeats outfits too often as I have a bit of a shopping habit but this top is so easy to dress up or down that I think I could wear it every week! And at Target prices-- yes please!!

I made something new for the chair in Olivia's room to wear. A patchwork slipcover. I'll share photos when I take them over the next day or two-- I absolutely love the result. Olivia's room is officially done-- well, not counting some new knobs but other than that-- finito!! Yay! Now on to Avery's room..... it's always something...what else would I do with my time?

Well hello there! It has officially been a long time since I blogged. I clearly needed a break and actually had zero problem taking one!! I am baffled by my actions as of late. Closed down the shop without a second thought and honestly don't mind. I truly feel like there is something else I should be doing. I have no idea what it is...but I know it will not come to me with the shop open. I do know one thing. I neeeed to blog. I feel like there are so many things I want to share with the world. Sometimes I feel like I am on this earth to make things pretty-- maybe I should write a book called "Make It Pretty" or "Make it Chic" Who knows. I do know, though, that it will come to me. I am totally at peace with the shop closed....well sort of....at least that's what i am telling myself ;) I am secretly dying to make more bags...it is all so crazy!! My fingers are itching for fabrics. I think when one takes a break, it becomes very apparent exactly what components we miss.

Thankful for More Room

I am making more room-- It's the "glass half full" approach to this........I have decided to close the shop. It IS officially Thanksgiving day. I am thankful that sometimes in the course of conversations things become very clear. I have been avoiding the studio for the last few weeks..... many weeks, actually. Almost dreading it.
We had company of Sunday and when a girlfriend asked "How's Gardenhouse?" My knee jeck reaction was "I'm taking a break." And things suddenly became very clear. I've closed the shop. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE designing, creating, making.....the shop churn has just lost it's luster. I have lost that drive to be up until 2am in the studio. Mostly due to the fact that when I am, so many things fall to the wayside. I don't particularly feel like sharing the rest of the thoughts behind this at this time. So I'll focus on the positive...There is a plan for me. I just need to take a step back to figure out what it is and I'm so fortunate to be able to do this without a second thought.

A few weeks ago I was out shopping for Halloween Party items for the girls classrooms and I got a call....from Mr. H...he was at Best Buy with the girls. He wanted to just run a few "quick purchases" by me, you know, before he single-handedly stimulated the economy! Now, before I get into this, I will say I sort of knew this was coming. We have a Wii.Which we have had for years and it has totally been on the fritz, so I knew a new game console was on the horizon. I also knew he had been sort of looking around for a new TV. Back to the phone call, he tells me he and then kids were playing the new Kinect in the shop and loved it so they were going to get one of those, he also said he was going to buy a 3-D tv. Mr. H is not one to make extravagant purchase so I just said fine with me and that was that. I went on my way with errands. Returned home to the kids playing their new games...on our old TV. "Where's the new TV?" I ask. The response....."it's being delivered on Tuesday." Uhhhhh....what? Why?? Oh of course, it's too large for us to get home!! Yes, sure it is. Oh and it won't fit in our armoire?? Ohhhhh....looks like were going to need some new furniture (big secret smile here!!) Well that certainly opened up a whole can of worms!

One new daybed/chaise is already in place. It's a grey tweed-- TDF! Rustic chic nesting tables. Done.

After searching high and low for the perfect TV stand, I ended up re-working a vintage dresser that I had in the garage. I turned it into a tv stand by simply removing the two middle drawers and converting those spaces to shelves. I really love the way it turned out. {excuse the messy wires in there. The DirectTV guy came yesterday and I have not had a chance to tuck everything in nicely}

The new sofa will be ordered this weekend.. Slipcovers, are a must with light colored sofas in this place. I'm also stalking that Anthro rug (the floral one my moodboard up there).....I swear I remember Anthro having a 20% off black Friday sale...does anyone else remember that?? I'd love to score a sale on that! My to-do list has grown significantly because I cannot simply replace everything. So slipcovers for the rest of the furniture is on the list. And if Mr. H does not take those 3-d glasses off and get up from his vista, he just might get slip covered too!!

I'm really looking forward to hanging out with my family, amazing food, great wine and setting the Thanksgiving table. I love any excuse to dress up a table top!! I'm hunting for new dishes this year and want to mix things up a bit, rustic and chic, vintage and modern. I found these amazing Colin Cowie gold croc print chargers that I am obsessed with but I think they must be from a past season and am having a really hard time finding them!! I'll keep hunting! I mean it, nothing. I could LIVE in jumpsuits. It's a no brainer choice, no top and pants to coordinate. So easy!! Shopping for Miss O's Birthday last week, I was perusing around the juniors department at Macy's, specifically the Material Girl line and stumbled across this jumpsuit-- on serious sale! It was love at first sight.

I'm sort of freaked out that I bought something for myself and something for Olivia in the same place...where is the time going?? These girls are growing up too fast! I paired it with a cream and gold sweater, and my favorite shoes right now. Women seriously chase me down to find out where I got them when I'm out and about in these shoes-- love them! The only thing missing from this outfit-- a serious stack of bracelets-- I really want a big old stack of Stella and Dot bracelets. A few Devis ,Serpent, Harlow and Renegade Cluster are all on my list. Santa, are you listening?? ps-- I also found a FAB black jumpsuit from Jessica Simpsons line that I am thinking might have to come to NY with me.....Who knew Macy's juniors department had such hidden gems??

Pretty and Witty.

The gal is funny and smart. Shannon Stewart of Madison Ave photography had posted on her facebook wall that she was looking for a size 8 girl to help with a shoot on Sunday. Miss A is a ham for the camera and I am obsessed with Shannon's photographs so I jumped on the opportunity. I did ask Avery if she wanted to do it as I knew it would be a time commitment and it was a bit of a drive. Funny that when I asked her, her response was "Do I get to keep the clothes?" How funny is that?? She so smart!

She is changing so much and growing a mile a minute. Last week she wanted to borrow a skirt from Olivia, which I am not sure she would have fit into. Her request was not met with enthusiasm (to say the least) I sat the girls down and told them that it is their choice right now, but at some point when they they can fit into the same size clothes, they will be expected to share some things as I will not buy two of everything. Avery replied "Soooooooo, when we are your size....." She was met with the enthusiasm as when she was asking to borrow her sisters skirt. How funny though, that she is starting to think like that. She is sharp and so witty!!

And cute to boot! And I'm sure if she was able to take anything home from the shoot, it would have been the feather skirt. She absolutely did NOT want to take that off. I don't blame her! Might have to figure out how make one of those...I was the only person at the shoot looking at the construction of the clothes :)

Last week was for me, one of the most personally challenging weeks I can remember. I won't get into the details because I am choosing to move on and put it behind me...dwelling can bring the wrong energy into this world! The good from last week?? My Olivia turned 11. On 11-11.

Her party was great, she probably had one of the best weekends she can remember...and I did too! Since she is a Veterans Day baby, she has no school on her birthday-- every year! How cool is that? So we had her party on Friday. It was one of the easiest parties I have ever done. I'm not sure if it was because the girls are getting older or what!/! but we had a great time. We did a scavenger hunt at the mall. Brian and I split the girls into two teams and I made up riddles that they had to figure out. All the riddles applied to store windows in the mall. For instance, Express had Christmas Trees in their window (Can you believe holiday stuff is all up already?? I think it's too early!!) So the riddle was 'The Express train to Christmas tree lane" They had to figure out the store and what was in the window and then take a picture of it. I went to the mall the day before the party and took notes on the windows and stores. It was so super simple! Brian's team won-- only because they cheated :) lol. We all had a blast not running around the mall. I would highly recommend this sort of a party. We came home did presents, ate cake and played a few rounds of wink murderer until parents arrived. So great!!! Loved it!

One of the best parts of the celebration was making Liv's tie-dye cake. We have never made a birthday cake before-- is that sad?? The girls actually made the cakes together the night before, which I thought was so sweet, the two of them in the kitchen together-- Avery turned to me and said "It doesn't matter that we forgot to add the eggs does it??" Funny now. Not so funny then - four cake mixes, three trips to the grocery store, one two layer tie-dye cake. Lots of fun and memories for the girls. All in all, a great weekend!

So that is what took up the end of the week last week. I'm sorry I missed What I Wore (I actually had photos this time!lol), Inspiration Workshop and Friday's style file. I will do better this week.

Oh gosh-- best thing ever to wake up to on a Monday morning!! Kamieo is AMAZE! So talented I just can't get over it! Carpet Bags will be hitting the shop through out the week. They are all one of a kind and all have some sort of cut velvet-- high end-- you know, the kind I like!! Silk cut velvet-- so delish you'll want to wrap yourself up in it! And of course the colorful floral is by Jennifer Paganelli....everything she touches turns to gold! Love that gal!!

And to top it all off, I'm finally feeling well rested!! yay!! Went to bed at 8:40 last night!! With the girls! All in one bed-- Mr. H had to do some people moving before he had space to get in! Woke up before my alarm clock (NEVER happens-- EVER) ready to conquer the world! Happy Monday to all!!

It's a staple for us in the fall and winter-- It's really easy to make and super delish. I omit the onions as my girls can sniff them out for miles. Dinner will be quick and delish tonight - hopefully eaten with the fire burning close by. I just have to get through watching Avery run the final mile of the Santa Clarita marathon... in. the. rain. She thinks it'll be fun! I'll need soup when that's finished!

Dog People

Do you love dogs? We adore our dogs. Three of them, two newfies Cooper and Higgins and a shi-tzu poodle mix maned The Bean, or Beanzie... we collectively call the three of them CootieBiggaBean - one word. The bean who is 9 pounds rules the roost, I think she is convinced that she is actually a newfie. All three of them bring such joy to our house and our family. I will say that big dogs are a LOT of work. They have minimal energy but lots of hair and they drool. A lot. And they snore...loud...like wake you up in the night loud. But we are "dog people" and we feel like the work is worth it.

Do you think that being a "dog person" or not says something about a person? Do you consider yourself a dog person? I have two friends who are "not dog people" and I'm always baffled by that. How can anyone not love dogs?? A girlfriend of mine is taking family holiday card photos and asked me to do a custom collar with a removable flower for her little dog-- two boys and one little girl dog! She buys Gardenhouse for herself and now she has a little dog to buy for as well ;) Her boys will be wearing red and grey - Maycee too! With a dash of pink thrown in there!

She of course opted for the coordinating leash...because that's how dog people roll! And I'm sure Maycee also drinks out of a Kate Spade bowl and snuggles under an hermes blanket- yes she does!

This weeks Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop prompt is {Flowers} Could there be anything more perfect to write about and inspire? I always have fresh cut flowers in the house because their looks and fragrance can lift moods instantly. Nothing makes me happier that fresh cut flowers from the garden-- My roses are going through their fall bloom right now and it is so lovely to have bunches of roses in the entry and on our kitchen table. Have you ever noticed that roses smell stronger in the morning? I don't know if it is because the house is void of other smells in the morning of if roes really are more fragrant in the morning... hmmm,either way, walking past a fresh cut bunch of roses makes me smile.

I'm pretty much a floral fragrance gal, too. I wear only floral perfumes and any candles in our house have a distinct floral smell - Brian calls it old lady smell....whatevs'!! I should also share with you another one of my little floral scented obsessions..... Lilly of the Valley potpourri sachets from Joann's Fabrics. Seriously...these things are the bomb. Not only do I put them in my closets and drawers, I also pin a little loop of ribbon to the top of them and hang the from doors in the house.

This one is hanging on the door to our downstairs bathroom- a room where our Newfies love to sleep so clearly a room that needs some floral fragrance!

Out From the Fog

I feel like I have been gone FOREVER! Sorry about that! I was in charge of organizing hundreds of volunteers for the girls school BooFest last week and was surprised at how much time that took. Along with having family in town over the weekend and then organizing Halloween parties in each of the girls classes I literally had zero time for anything else-- and I was actually quite bummed about it to tell you the truth! For the past few years I have organized the Father Daughter dance at the girls school - and in the end, after all the hard work and tireless hours, I can sit back and say it was all worth it. I have to say that this time, I don't feel that way. It was honestly like living an episode of Desperate Housewives!!

I was so stressed before during and after the event that I actually had nightmares!! How crazy is that?? In one night, I dreamt that a woman and man were living in Avery's room with 16 feral cats who had managed to get under the carpet upstairs so I could hardly walk up there without getting atttacked by cats, in the same night, I dreamt that I was stuck in my bathroom with Black Widow spiders and webs everywhere and then (can you believe...it goes on!!??) I dreamt that the man who was living in Averys room with the cats was in my car with me as I was driving down the street blow drying my hair (yeah, strange) and he electrocuted me with my blowdryer!! I actually woke myself up shouting "ouch" in that one!! Whaaaattttt is all that about?? I won't indulge you with a synopsis of the other night. Isn't that crazy??

I was excited to have the weekend to recover-- we went to the beach on Saturday...can you believe that? It was about 75 and sunny-- no wind, it was gorgeous! So relaxing! But Sunday it was back to running around and then Monday in both kids classes all day for Halloween parties. Trick-or-treating and a sleep over on Monday as the girls had the day off yesterday. Life is crazy. I am demanding it slow down. I have a plan.....to work the word "No" into my vocabulary. Starting now!

Looking forward to a relaxing end of the week-- full of trips to the gym and lots of time spent in the studio.

On Girls

Being a mom of girls has it's benefits (and it's drawback but we like to focus on the positive around here!) Avery is a mini me - 110%! We are planning the re-decoration of her room and she spent some time looking through Elle Decor magazines. She found a vintage chandelier that she loved, showed it to me and said "I love this chandelier, it would look great in my room. I don't know why these people have it hanging in their family room because it is too small for the room" I looked down to see a chandelier that was too small for the space. I had to laugh. It's crazy! What child knows that at age 8? Granted she is my baby who not let me put her down for the first 10 months of her life - I mastered every task using just one hand-- even threw a baby shower for a friend with one arm. She was my clinger for sure - so I guess she has picked up a few things along the way. She also asked for a pinterest account this weekend. And I thought "Why not?" I have never seen anything inappropriate on there and will monitor her boards-- so she's on pinterest! Funny! I had to tell her to get off Pinterest and come eat dinner before it got cold on Sunday night -- so funny. Here is one of her first pins - Hermes Scarves turned Vans by Robert Verdi. She is made of my blood, after all. She is also having a blast pinning hair styles.

You have to know in this house when one gets something, the other is sure to follow. Especially if it is the younger getting something first. Olivia is the typical older child in so many ways. She was born independent-- Walked at 10 months, hit the ground running on the first day of pre-school and asked me to just drop her off for her first day of First grade. She is always cool calm and collected - well, for the most part at least :) So she is pinning too! Make-up tricks. Some of Olivias best friends have high school sister so they are often "up" on what the high school sect is dong. This is both good an bad - fortunately, the older girls are good role models-- but they have lots of stuff that younger girls want -- like make-up-- from Sephora!

Yes....Sephora! Olivia does not want "fake makeup" any longer- she wants the real deal! And she would prefer it to come in a kit with instructions so she can practice. I spent over an hour in Sephora with her and a friend on Sunday. It was fun, but a little crazy! They were the youngest girls in there for sure. I'm on the fence about this one....she will not under any circumstance be allowed to wear make up out of the house so I am trying to just liken it to playing dress up and leave it at that. What do you think....about make-up and 11 year olds?? Real make-up, even though it is just worn for fun. It's an interesting subject. All part of growing up with two girls.

ps- If you have any great tips on dealing with girl drama - drama within her group of friends-- PLEASE send it my way!! Thanks! (That's the drawback I am choosing not to talk about.)

Front Door Style

Polyvore and I are fighting - don't know why, but we are! I held tight all day yesterday hoping it would sort itself out (you know that "I'll give you some time to realize you are wrong" approach) but still no luck. So my pretty Front Door Decor polyvore shall not be - we are now well into Saturday and I'm officially cheating on polyvore-- with Pinterest of course!

I have talked quite a bit about my front door-- the color of pea soup, with the nails sticking out around it that have been there since our Christmas garland was taken down. I literally have had nothing at the front door since then. I threw a peacock feather wreath on it and called it a day. I had been contemplating painting it for quite some time and finally got around to it! Yay! So here is my new front door. I wish i had a before to show you - but you know me and admitting to ugly parts of the house....lol. Best to just show the pretty "after" shots. ha!

I painted the door black, (there is one spot on there that I cannot seem to get to gloss for some reason-- I have NO idea why. Can you see it? I hate to point out the ugly but not sure what to do about it. I have already painting another coat on it...might have to try one more coat.) added a chevron stripe curtain and a really simple sisal rug - I'm thinking about stenciling an "h" on the rug. I decorated with an organic looking tall wooden vase with a fern and a modern piece of pottery (that is really meant for inside) and then a few pumpkins. It was a really simple and quick makeover. Painting the door was not as bad as I though it was going to be....the only issue I had was closing the door for the night after three coats of semi gloss paint, which I knew was not 110% dry. I didn't want the edges to peel off as the door closed onto the seal...I surprised myself with an idea-- put Vaseline on the seal of the door jam so the door would not stick. It worked perfectly! I just wiped the Vaseline off the following day and let the paint completely cure. I love it!

Now the dilemma is what to put on the door. I have looked high and low for a wreath that I love and they are just not out there. I'm resigned to the fact that I am just not a wreath person. There is ONE that I have found that I love....but i need to make it...so maybe at Christmas :) so--- for now I am thinking I'll just put a door knocker on there and that's all. After all....why do I have to have a wreath?? I DON'T! Epiphany, ha?? So I am now on the hunt for a door knocker..my top picks are this fox, an vintage owl or hunting around ebay and etsy for something like this - which I lurve!

The other problem with this is that our house number has 5 digits in it so if I were going to use a number, should I just use a random one...like 4 since there are 4 of us?? Or just any random number I find on a vintage metal tag? What do you think? I'm also on the hunt for a new simple, sleek outdoor light but have not had much time to peruse for that yet.

Inspiration Workshop No. 19 - Favorite Accessories

This weeks Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop is {Favorite Accessories} I don't need much help in this area! I am a firm believer that the accessories make the outfit. I would much rather walk out of the house with no make up on than no jewelry!

I have two go-to staples in my accessories file. Ok, maybe really three- three things I will not walk out of the house without. Number one, a clutch- Clutches in particular give a pop of polish and chic to every outfit. Even if the clutch is still very casual in feel, the premise of a little handbag certainly adds a touch of glam to any outfit. Number two is a necklace - if you are going dainty then layer a few of them. Big bold and vintage is my favorite look. And number three is bracelets - again love the layered look if you are not going to wear something chunky. One is never enough unless it is big. I also really won't leave the house without concealer and mascara and flowery perfume. Do those count as accessories? Oh and good shoes. Oooookayyyy, do I have a problem here? lol. I'm an accessories freak!

What I Wore Wednesday

I'm having a little party for myself as I actually got to photo two outfits from this week so I can participate in What I Wore Wednesday over at The Pleated Poppy. It's such a great concept and although I am not one that ever needs an excuse to pick the kids up from school in heels, I'll take it, ya know!

Look number one -- this was mid day after I had made a trip to the gym then to the flea market in sweats. A little advice - don't go the the flea market in the outfit below unless you want to pay top dollar. Always wear something a little schleppy...and no fancy shoes!

Necklace: Vintage - scored at the flea market that morning! {It's my new fave necklace}

Shoes (although you cannot see them) were brown platform sandals by Sam Edelman.

And today- the weatherman said it was going to be 78 so I opted for jeans - Ha! It was 85 when I went to pick the kiddos up. Fortunately I spent the entire day in the studio so had no idea until I stepped out the door at 2:45 that I was overdressed.

This is a pretty basic outfit for me but the vintage necklace gives it a little punch-- and most of it is just there to support the shoes (business shoes for a day at the office, you know)..and the new bag....carpet bag style! I'll share more of that another day. ;)

The false impression that cooler weather is here has brought all the great vendors back to the flea market. I only made it half way through today before I was out of money. I picked up a few things for myself and quite a few things to offer all of you on bags as well! Yay! Can you get over the pink earrings?? Yes, hey are GIANT earrings with pink suede and loads of vintage rhinestones. I'm in love with them...would make a fab ring or bracelet.

Also really want to share this with all of you......Target has mylar chandeliers in silver and black for FIVE DOLLARS! In the Halloween section - I picked up four this weekend. (I did look for them online so I could post a link but I could not find them) Not sure what I'm going to do with them but my imagination is running wild....we do have two birthdays coming up in the next two months along with a possibly hosting a baby shower...

Halloween Decor

Are you a big Halloween fan? I am not. At all. At least not when it comes to decor. The girls always have great costumes and loads of fun trick-or-treating with friends but I am honestly not big into decorating for any holiday other than Christmas. I don't do too much seasonal stuff around the house- maybe change out a throw blanket, a few pillows and a tablecloth but I'm not one to fill the house with twigs and fall leaves. Is that strange? Am I the only person you know who doesn't decorate for fall? Maybe I should start......
The usual Halloween shenanigans around here entail carving pumpkins the day before (In my defense--it's still usually so hot that our pumpkins are filled with fruit flies within a day-- they cave in on about day three) throwing around a few glittery, feathery decorations at the front door and hanging a few paper lanterns in the trees-- We live on a cul-de-sac that has only 6 houses and most of them are not home on Halloween so we don't get many trick or treaters so I sort of think, "who am I doing this for anyway??" Until this year when the girls started grumbling about it. Sooo, I have decided to cave and let them decorate. At first I thought I would just take them to Target and let them go to town with fake spider webs but alas, I just can't do it! So I've been trailing around pinterest (surprised??I know!!) looking for chic, beautiful Halloween inspiration.

Happy Wednesday everyone! I've officially decided to commence "One of a Kind Wednesday" posts. They were fun for summer and you can be sure you'll always find loads of one of a kind goodness here on Brooch the Subject but I am sort of over them as well as I would really like to participate in WIWW over at The Pleated Poppy. I have numerous times posted photos of what I am wearing on the Gardenhouse facebook page and I'm always amazed at how interested everyone is in that! lol. So I think this would be fun for everyone and will of course be fun for me to push my outfit boundaries. Of course I was planning on something fun and cute for today and I wake up to RAIN!! Wow! Haven't seen rain in forever! So I feel like wearing sweats all day- it's 7:30 am and I'm on the couch with a blanket. Brian and I were in San Diego over the weekend. We had an amazing time just hanging out. Did a 6 mile bike ride around Coronado Island and decided we are going to retire there - tomorrow. lol. I had some really great outfits this weekend but can you believe I didn't take a single photo? So I got nada. Instead, I will share with you two things I am madly in lurrrve with right now--

Entertain Me - Tapas

Entertaining has always been a large part of my life. Growing up my parents were always entertaining. They were involved in a group that we still loving call "The Gourmet Group" Once a month the Kings, The Smiths, The Bivettos and The Hopkinsons would get together at one couples house for dinner. The host would pick a theme, set the menu and then assign recipes. Each person would come with a prepared dish, wine was involved and they all had a fabulous time! The gourmet group turned into our extended family. Some of my best childhood memories are with all of them-- renting big beach houses and lake houses in the summer, always great food and great times! And it has gotten better and better over the years. The parties now include all of us...the "kids" who now all have kids. Fortunately, all of our moms have all passed the cooking and entertaining skill on to us, along with a love of entertaining. Our move to Southern California took us away from our gourmet group so we decided to start one down here. Four families-- three who love to cook-- one who is a shoe in for a fruit plate and anything store bought-- but they are good company-- hopefully Cindy will think about starting to cook at some point;) -- once a month we decided on a theme and get together for a night of friends and fabulous food. Last weekends theme was Tapas.

The food was amazing, the company perfect! I thought it would be nice to share with you the recipes that Brian and I made for the night. They were all very easy and super delish! We made Brochetas de Ternera {Spanish Beef Kabobs} recipe found here. Seriously TDF! The drizzle sauce is scrumptious! Ajillo Mushrooms-- Garlic Mushrooms-- Need I say more about that one?? Garlic. Mushrooms. Yum! Here's the recipe. And Piquillo Pepper stuffed with shrimp salad. Another winner! We could not find piquillo peppers and were in a time crunch so we just bought the small red yellow and orange peppers, grilled them, and used those instead. My suggestion on this is strain the shrimp before adding the mayo and add the mayo one tablespoon at a time to taste. I think the recipe calls for too much mayo and ended up only adding about half of what it calls for. Everything was delish!! And there are so many great tapas recipes that it was honestly hard to choose which one to make.

Are you entertaining this weekend? We went to friends last night for dinner and a movie. Watched Bridesmaid which I actually didn't think was as funny as everyone made it out to be. Still entertaining, just not fall on the floor funny like I was expecting. maybe next weekend I'll share the recipes I made last night. I was in charge of desserts. Happy Saturday!

ps....revisiting this post. Did not even realize it was Sunday, not Saturday until i was just on fb and saw a football post. HA! Kids are on fall break, shiped off to my family up north and B is taking a few days off so it really seems like Saturday! lol.

A new lease on life!

A few weeks ago I was in the studio late night working away and catching up on Project Runway (you do remember my obsession with Tim Gunn, no?) I was sort of half listening while the designers were given the task of designing an outfit for Nina Garcia- yeah, no small feat there. Anyway, as I worked away, I could hear that she was circling the workroom talking to each of the designers when one of them, talking about a plunging neckline, sheepishly asked her what undergarments she usually wears. Tim looked at the designer, looked at Nina and said "Well you don't wear a bra, do you Nina?" She replied with "No" This stopped me dead in my tracks and really got me thinking!! Why do I wear a bra?? If Nina Garcia doesn't wear one, why do I?? Yes, I liken myself to her at times! lol. That Project Runway episode was like a new found lease on life for me!

Let me tell you a little about where I live.....and the boobies here. A LOT of women in this town have implants. Large ones. We belong to a fitness club where most of the gals come to exercise class, or better yet, tennis lessons scantily dressed. Little bottoms, large tops, if you know what I mean. I went through a time where I thought for sure implants were in my future. But the risks of surgery never really did sit well with me so I resorted to push up bras....you know, the bra that comes with half a boob already in it? The though of implants now seriously makes me laugh. As does the push up bra. Why do we think this is the way women should look? It's so skewed! I have sworn off trying to look like a C when I am really ....oh probably like an A! lol. I like my little boobs. And I love the fact that I don't have to wear a bra if I don't want to. Over sized implants for the sake of vanity look horrible! Little lace bralettes are waaaayyyyy cuter and way more chic, no? Ask Nina Garcia, she'll tell you!

One thing I will be making is cake plates. I've been scouring thrift shops for the perfect vintage pieces to use as stands I will then use epoxy glue to attach plates. I'll definitely be mixing up some modern printed plates (Mikasa, kate Spade and Ralph lauren all have fabulous patterns) with vintage pieces and am really looking forward to making them. One person on my list entertains OFTEN so she'll be getting a whole collection of them.

Another DIY that I'll be attempting? Gold jars like these found on Pinterest (of course!) I seriously love the simplicity of an upcycled bottle or jar and the glam-chic of the gold paint. IF Rachel Zoe were to have a coutry chic wedding, these would for sure be her centerpieces!!

I will be playing around with this for the holidays. Mostly because I neeeeed these in my home! Are you going to be going handmade for the holidays? What do you think about doing a DIY Monday series? "The cobblers daughter has no shoes." Have you ever heard that saying? I find it super amusing as you would think my girls wear Gardenhouse every day, but actually they don't. Avery rocks Gardenhouse often-- she is the queen of colorful little skirts and ruffle tops. But Olivia....I actually stopped making things for her last year as she started to give me the sly eye when I would say "Do you want to wear this today?" holding up a cute dress I had made for her. It seems she has moved beyond Gardenhouse dresses and tops-- until now.

I challenged myself to make something she would not only want to wear, but love to wear. I started with a really fun men's t-shirt from Aeropostale (one of her and her cronies fave shops at the moment) that had fun vintage looking earphones on it (don't tell her it is anything vintage) and converted it to a fun pillowcase tunic top. She loves it! Yay! Rocked it with a pair of gold leggings, a headband from Blossom Bands and houndstooth Toms. Love that gal in her Gardenhouse! She even wore it to a birthday party - wish she would have stopped to let me snap a few photos but no such luck with her and her 'tude-- toting along her chic little gift topped with a fun hair accessory that I scored for under 4 bucks-- way better than a silly little bow don't you think?

This really is a fun way to dress your child up in a tee of old-- would be perfect for college tee's or even favorite football teams - Olivia's favorite team is the Bengals-- for two reasons, first she loves tigers and second, she originally thought they were called the bagels...and she likes those too! I might have to go out and find a Bengals shirt to convert. If you are interested in the making of the tshirt dress - there is a great pillow case dress tutorial here, the tshirt seems to be sold out online but this one or this one would be great as well. Ruffle fabric is SisBoom West Indies (the whole line is amazing!) And the houndstooth is from Paula Prass (another one of my all time fave ladies) This may become my new little obsessions - next to refurbishing furniture of course ;)

I have a ~~slight obsession with~~ soft spot for rehabbing furniture. I LOVE the old stuff-- as you probably know. But, not everything about the stuff-- most of it needs a little modern touch added to it. And that takes time so you can imagine what this does to ones garage. There is currently a back log of projects on our garage...along with one set of drawers that were painted white and have been sitting there for so long that I am now thinking I may actually want to paint them a different color before I move them into the house. It's a problem, I know. Mr H sorta' thinks it's a problem too! I guess in the realm of problems, though, it's not the worst one to have right??

I have been searching for a desk chair for quite some time. I constantly waiver between wanting to find a traditional desk chair with wheels or something a little less "desk." I have also been searching for a good desk chair for the studio as I really need something on wheel in there as I have three machines set up at all times and would love to be able to easily wheel the chair from one to another. Sooooooo, last week, when I was out and about, I decided too swing by one of my fave thrift stores.....

I spotted this beauty...for $14.99! The beauty of it is that it is all metal. Nothing plastic like so many other rolling desk chairs. I knew it was perfect for either my office area or the studio....but not so perfect the garage! lol. The plan was to get it home and get it redone quickly.

Wa La! Finito. It took me just over an hour and one nasty glue gun burn to remove a few screws cut apart the fabric, put a new cover together, hot glue it and put it all back together. Not too bad! I think this would look completely amaze in a bright fabric-- which will happen at some point. I just wanted to get it done so I used what I had on hand. Still pretty delish don't you think?

Especially piled high with Gardenhouse goodies! Scarves are in the shop now! Sooo versatile for fall and winter.

So here is my post that should have posted last night-- around midnight-- until I went to load my polyvore in to the post and it loaded with no photos. Every time I tried--may have been due to the fact that I was at the computer with one eye open! Saturday morning is proving off to a better start.

Is it ironic that I am finally getting around to doing the Friday Style File post at exactly midnight? Would you believe that I started it at 8pm? It's been one of those night...one of those weeks. I swear there must be something in the air. I have been in a total funk - really-- a total funk. I wasn't feeling it this week. At all. Do you ever have that overwhelming feeling that you are just spinning your wheels? Standing still? I never doubt my design capabilities, style sense or creativity, but I often question whether or not I am in the right place to best utilize them. This week I thought many-a-time about closing down the shop immediatley and persuing other ventures. But we are still here. For now anyway. It's late. And I am in a loung-y mood.

Inspiration Workshop No.16 - Family Room

Another fabulous prompt from the Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop - Family Room. Although I have posted photos before of our living room - I think I have yet to share our family room with you. This is mostly due to the fact that the walls are painted yellow and it always looks horrific in photos. That combined with the fact that it needs a little updating will ban it from the blog-- vintage, check. modern, check. pretty... ah, so-so. It certainly is not up to par so it just doesn't make the blog cut right now! It will soon though! I have big plans to paint it while the kid are up at my parents for the week over fall break. I think that would also be a good time to hang some curtains too! And make a slip cover or two and also try to convince Mr. H that a new couch is in order.....hmmmmm. That might be a tough one! I'm dying for a tufted couch. Powers of persuasion are going to be needed with that.

I of course have been on the hunt for inspiration. I know for sure that our walls are going cream and one wall will be striped. The room also need to work with our kitchen as they are both conjoining. I found the above photo really inspiring as it mixes both vintage florals (on the lampshade) and modern florals in the wallpaper). I currently have this wallpaper as a backsplash in our kitchen so everything will need to work with that. I'm also completely dying for something velvet-- like the gorgeous sofa below. I think I'll be mixing that in with the vintage iron crib turned love seat that we have. I'll be mixing in patterns of all kinds and am trying my hardest to use plenty of solids as well. Pulling in loads of vintage pieces - have I ever told you about my vintage lamp obsessions? It's not healthy, I promise you that! Some great books and plenty of texture.

Where else can you find amazing handmade items in the same page vintage. There are so many great artists and crafters in the world and Etsy has been the perfect way to open doors for so many of us. If you don't already know, I am obsessed with Sugarland and Jennifer Nettles in general. I absolutely love her style and love their music. She should have a closet full of Gardenhouse bags....she is so us! I was fortunate enough to get tickets to their Incredible Machine tour for mothers day so our family went had had a fabulous night with the at the greek Theater. It was the girls first concert. Today I'm rocking one of their tour shirts-- which is black and needs a little softening up- so some pink Elizabeth and James heels will do the trick and a soft pink foldover clutch.

I really wish I had these Stella and Dot bracelets-- they would be absolutely PERFECT with this outfit. 10 years ago yesterday. I remember the morning like it really was yesterday. Miss O was 10 months old. I had been fortunate to be able to go back to work part time after having her. Back to my previous job. At Charles Schwab. Two blocks away from the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco. We got up early in the usual blur, got ready and headed out the door. Listened to some kids songs in the car and upon arrival at my moms, learned about the first plane. At that time, no one was really sure what was happening. I don't think at that time, anyone had a clue what was to come. I hopped back in the car with a bit of trepidation and jumped on the train to financial district in San Francisco. This is where the depth of the situation came to light. Once the second plane hit, people on the train started talking. Brian called me and told me to get off the train NOW. Turn around. Get home. There was still another plane in the air and they thought it was coming to the West Coast - if they were looking for another financial hub, the Pac Exchange was it. Two blocks away from my office. By this time, I was through the tunnel and at my stop, so I got off and for some reason went upstairs and out on to the street. I don't think I really got it. I thought I should just check in with work.....hello?? Right? By the time I hit the street, the flood of people coming towards me made me realize this was not the place to be. It really was serious. Everyone was heading home. It was clear I should do the same. Now it was sinking in and I could not get out of there fast enough. That train could not possibly go fast enough. 45 minutes later I was back at my mom's house, watching in horror as the day unfolded. As the days unfolded. The weeks, the months nd the years. Today, 10 years ago, we woke up to a changed world.

Brian and I have watched a few of the specials over the last week or two and I am amazed at how haunted I still am by seeing all those papers flying around as the towers fell. The financial world was still very paper driven at that time and I just knew that was some of our paperwork. Those were some of our friends, our co-workers. It's amazing that even now, 10 years later just a glimpse of those towers falling instantly brings tears to my eyes. Yesterday I tried to watch the tribute but I just couldn't do it. I lasted about 5 minutes and could no longer stand watching moms call out their children's names, sons call out their dad's names, husbands their wives, wives their husbands, nephews, sisters, brothers It was just. too. sad. So many children have grown up without their parents. And add to that all of our service men and women that have been lost in the past 10 years just adds to the tragedy. Instead, I spent the day hanging out with the girls, being thankful that we have them and that they have us. {I wanted to blog this yesterday but just couldn't do it. I really didn't want to send myself into a rut. So I hung with the girls and I sewed.... I needed to put a little joy in the world. And today, the day seems much clearer.}

Inspiration Workshop No.14 - Books

This weeks Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop prompt is {books.} I know so many people who read book after book after book and I am soooo envious of them. That used to be me. I have such great memories growing up of going to the book store with my dad. He was an avid reader for a long time as well. Never. Ever. Did he tell me no when I asked for a new book. Which I think is an amazing rule and one that I live by with my girls. If they want a new book to read, we go get one (obviously with the notion that it is actually going to be read -- and it always is!)

Before kids and a myriad of other activities that take up loads of space in my schedule and in my brain I actually had the time to read books on a consistent basis. I eventually threw in the towel on that after one too many times of waiting so long between readings that I would have to go back to the beginning of the story to remember what I had already taken place. I'm ok with it. I do sort of miss reading stories, but it's ok because I surround myself with inspiring books that tell a different kind of story. Fashion, decor, color. Some of my favorite books from a side table in our living room and pictured above. Any of them are easy to pickup and read here and there and not have to continually catered to ( other than the Gospel According to Coco but that one is pretty so it stays) It's nice to sit once in a while, with something to sip and a book full of inspiration, although it seems my mind is usually occupied with other things at this point.

One of a Kind Wednesday No. 12

I might have gotten just a little carried away last week sewing onesie dresses for my niece. Her daddy likes to watch Formula One car racing so I went with that theme for a couple of the dresses. Onesie dresses are quick and easy to make - appliqueing a race car is not! ha! Quite a challenge but I worked it out. For sure a one of a kind-- until her daddy asks for another one- I am sucker for that guy too! He's my favorite brother in the whoooole world! And how cute is a race car in SisBoom fabrics? I mean really!!

I may have gone a bit overboard with hair accessories (do you love the vintage millinery leaves?)

Inspiration Workshop No.13 - Vintage

You can imagine my excitement when I saw the prompt for this weeks Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop was vintage. Hold on to your hats because I could go on for hours about this one! I'm trying to wrap my somewhat sane mind around all the things I want to say about vintage but not sure I'll get there!
I.heart.vintage.everything. It's pretty much as simple as that. Looking around my house, it is on my walls in the form of mirrors, prints and paintings. It is on my shelves in the form of dishes as loads of bird figurines! I have an unhealthy addiction to vintage lamps...some of them have not even been re-wired so I won't plug them in but they are just stunning to look at! I'm also loving vintage Vogue covers right now and am trying to figure out how to work those into the house.

What is it that so appeals to me about vintage? Well, number one, things are not made now like they were then. Everything seems to be so cheaply made and superficial now. Vintage pieces have heart and soul and personality that you cannot find on the shelves of Homegoods (not that I don't love me some Homegoods!) or any modern day furnishings store. Their character speaks to me - vintage is in me. (so cheesy!! but it is!) I also love the possibilities that vintage brings.

One of a Kind Wednesday No. 11

The giant InStyle fall Fashion Guide arrived at my door yesterday and I have soooo many tear sheets I'm not even sure where to begin! There is just so much inspiration in this issue it's craaaazy! Color-blocking, really chunky knits, floral dresses, TDF lingerie, amazing wool pieces, and of course some really great contrasty outfits that I absolutely die over. I'm always a sucker for mixing pattern and styles {and drinks:) ha!} This really got me thinking about what I am offering for fall - new bags, and a few other accessories that will be heading your way soon. Scarves are a staple and can take any outfit from boring to fab with the twist of the wrist. One of the things I really love about Gardenhouse bags is that they really do and punch to an everyday outfit. So I thought, why not do the same with scarves??

I'll be offering cowls in 4-5 different colors ~ All will have lace accents. I seriously love these!! Some of them will be one of a kind as I have a pretty large stash of vintage lace that will perfect for them. Others will be offered in short runs. They will make perfect gifts and will bring any everyday outfit to the next level in a snap. Pair with the perfect black biker jacket for a soft and edgy look.

A Change.

Fall is not at all in the air here-- it is going to be 100 degrees here again today. I cannot wait for the change of season --cooler weather and crisp mornings, it just seems like it is never going to arrive! I'm gearing up in the studio for some new shapes and concepts for fall -- I think you will all love. Something different.

I'm really loving tassels lately. Vintage, gold tassels. I have a plan for these, but it's harder than I thought it would be to tear apart such beautiful pieces. I guess I should keep in mind that they will be re-constructed into something even more beautiful. Can't wait to share.

Yesterdays trek to the other side of LA for fabric(which often seems like driving to another state!) rendered me in the car for a few hours so I thought I would make good use of my time by listening to a book. The Secret is always a good listen and read and often returns me to center. The laws of attraction are something to pay attention to. It teaches that your feelings are essentially a manifestation of your thoughts and are put out into the universe on a specific wave length which delivers back to you in the same manner. So, essentially-- be happy! Consciously happy! One part of the book focuses on short cuts -- Specific mood lifters that can quickly change your thoughts and emotions. Songs, photos, whatever it is that makes you smile. Sooooo.. where am I going with this you ask? I started to think about music and how it really does effect my mood and how I should maybe have a theme song for each week - a song that instantly puts a smile on my face. So, I thought I'd share with you my mood lifter for the week.

Beware-- the video is addicting. Did you know Adam Levine ~~is such eye candy with his shirt off~~ had so many tattoos? Wow that put's a smile on my face! I got the moves like Jagger this week (and I soooo need to find a shirt that says that!) You??

After the Paint

After the PAINt, comes the fun. Miss O's room is coming together.slowly. I need a staff for the decorating alone! Last night Brian asked if I was sick of having things turned upside down as when I'm redoing anything upstairs I basically empty the room into the hallway. I am sick of it. But the result is always worth the chaos! And I told him that this won't happen again until she is at least in high school. THAT stopped both of us dead in our tracks. HIGH SCHOOL! Gasp! One of a kind Wednesday came and went without a post-- which really irritates me because these little beauties were simply sitting pretty all day just waiting to be photographed!! And I didn't get to it until the light was too far gone. So it is, so it is. So I'm here now.-- With fun little ditties that prove I spend waaaayyy too much time on pinterest-- which is where I found inspiration for these.

How crazy is it that friendship bracelets are back?? Aren't hey such a throwback to our younger days?? I decided to have a little fun and make a few updated more modern versions. I. Heart. Them. You? They are in the shop and are one of a kind. I'm hoping to offer a few more fun little pretties as the weeks go on. Gift-ables- maybe with each One of Kind Wednesday, or Thursday :) You like?

I have had the urge to start painting lately...inspired by so many amazing images I have seen on pinterest. I am clearly drawn to watercolor and acrylic. I am for sure going to try my hand at it one day soon, you know, when I get off this re-decorate-the-entire-house kick I am on and when I find another 12 waking hours in each day. Then I will paint beautiful paintings.

Until then, I am painting bedrooms. Can I please tell you, there is a reason paint is spelled PAINt. Yesterday, Mr.H took the girls to the beach so that I could spend the day painting Olivia's room. We had painted swatches on her wall the previous weekend so knew what we wanted and had lived with it for the week. Perfect! Except the gal at the paint store misinformed me about the sheen of the sample she gave me. And I should have double checked myself as I had that "that's strange" feeling but I didn't. So I chose eggshell as the finish. I honestly have no idea what I was thinking. Why would it be any different than any other paint?? I just sort of took her word for it and went with it!! Gaaaahhhh.m I HATE any sort of sheen on a wall. Really. Can't stand it. And Olivia's room is long with windows at one end so the light pours in. So-- to make a long story short...ha ha ha... I got the eggshell paint and painted her room. It took me 4 hours. And it dried. Shiny. With a glare so you could hardly even tell what color it is! And then I went and got the correct paint. And painted it all again. And today it needs another coat. Dreading it. And then tonigth I'll be up on the ladder trimming around her 10 foot ceilings. I'm trying to focus on the fun stuff that will come next. Decorating!! Fabrics and rugs and lamps and all sorts...even a little thumbtack art on the walls! PAINt now, Fun later.

I have a bit of an obsession with animal prints right now. Can you tell by the new bags?? Both are amazingly versatile.

For today's style file, I thought I would share with you what I'm wearing today -- either of these bags could be paired with my outfit. I'm sporting silk sweatpants from Monrow (I linked to their regular sweatpants as I wish I could find a link to them online but I can't) I found mine at TJMaxx last week for $20-- their french terry ones sell for over $100 so I am sure the silks would be more. Yeah baby! Mama loves a good deal! I paired it with a slouchy grey Lycra tee from Gap (that is also no longer available - scored that one day when they were having 40% off the entire store. The shoes....Nine West outlet, BOGO worked out to about $20. And the necklace I made at The Creative Connection Event last year in Kaari Meng's class. (That wasn't cheap! But well worth the money spent!)

Does your hubby ever watch Extreme Couponing and then give you that look like "where are your coupons?" Yeah, mine too! Little does he know that I do coupon -- just not paper ones! All the deals I got above actually saved us money! See I spend nothing! Practically free if you think about how much I actually saved! ha ha ha! Just wait 'til he sees how much I saved on 6 pairs of shoes from Piperlime on Wednesday! 70%! I'm sure I'll have to explain that when the Fedex guy shows up with a box the size of his Caddy! I'll simply say I've been watching too much Extreme Couponing and am just building up my stash like they do!! Yes, that's right. Always thrifty!

Inspiration Workshop No.12 - The Front Porch

This weeks Gussy Sews inspiration Workshop prompt is front porch and right now ours is a sad story out there. I have been wanting to re-paint our front door since we move in 6 years ago (eek) and spruce it up since I took down our Christmas decor. I know. Sad. The nails from our Christmas garland are still sticking out of our door surround...not only does it look completely cold and prickly for an entrance, I honestly cannot believe that no one has injured themselves on those! Anyway, I have a peacock feather wreath on the door right now and the door itself is a light green colors-- super boring! I would LOVE to go with a bright color....How inspiring are all of these??

But I don't think Mr. H would let anything bright slide..and I would most likely get sick of it. So I am thinking black. With a pop of color in the form of some fun vases next to the door - and fabric in the window that is currently covered with plantation shutters. Maybe even a fun door knocker. Plants are a no no for me as I am notorious for not watering them-- even though I walk by them at least three times a day! I really don't like that our front door is so uninviting and so un-chic right now!! Might have to stay up late one night sprucing it up out there. It's been on the list foreva'! Paint is waiting in the garage and fun fabric hunt starts now.

I've been buried under a pile of pillows lately...and not ones on my bed! Euro shams - in the studio. I've just finished up a large order and am ready to move beyond shams! And back to bags...and fall dresses. I haven't been able to play with the gals at Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop the past few weeks so I'm happy to be back-- Ya'll know I'm not one to pass up a post on Gardening!!

Our garden plays a huge part in my world. My studio is across the garden, we often eat from our garden, the pool is in the garden, and we entertain. often. in the garden.

In the mornings, when the house is still quiet, I open the doors and windows and listen to all the birds. It's a very comforting sound, coming from the garden. Often when I'm working, I have the french doors open and no music on just listening to the sounds of our garden. We spent hours our first two summers here re-planting and reworking our garden. We don't spend as much time out working now as things are just more in the "growing" phase. New plantings are not needed very often...although additions are always welcome!

I almost always have a vase full of fresh cut flowers on the kitchen table that are from our garden. Nothing lifts my spirits like the smell of garden roses....don't know why but their scent can change my mood in a heart beat. I will for sure be cutting some fresh roses for the house this weekend when we entertain...outside, in the garden with badminton, swimming and an outdoor movie. It's the last official weekend of summer vacation for us. How about you? What's your garden like? Will you be spending time in it this weekend? Our summer days are numbered. 7 to be exact. We will be back to daily routines in one week. I'm looking forward to it but am also trying to make the most of the last few days with the girls around. So instead of sewing for one of a kind Wednesday, yesterday we spent the day baking. Seriously the best cookies eva'!! Brown Sugar Crackles. They are delish!! You can find the recipe here. I highly suggest making them. And they are honestly not that bad for you - as far as cookies go!

Today my mini me and I visited one of our new fave haunts, Fishy Finds in Simi Valley. Piles...and I do mean piles, of antique treasures at insane prices!! We had a blast weeding our way through. Can you believe Miss A loves to do this at age 8??!! Crazy. Miss O is not so into it...she and her BFF spent the day helping their all time fave teacher set up her room for the upcoming school year. So Avery and I had a day to ourselves which was really nice. So would you like to see our finds?? Our Fishy finds (hello, cheesy!)

An insane wicker chaise that I am beyond loving!! And a ceramic bird...which I can never seem to resist! Right now Miss A is out in the garden sitting on the chaise doing fuse beads. Funny how a new piece of furniture can get her to sit still! Wow! We also happened to drive by a Joann Fabrics on the way home I'm usually not one to pass by a fabric store without a quick stop...although I will say I almost never buy fabric at Joanns as they just don't seem to stock anything good. Today I scored the most amazing home dec floral fabric from their red tag rack. One of those that I didn't really need but just totally fell in love with -- So I only bought three yards. And now that I am home I am wishing I had bought the entire bolt as I really realllllyy want it for drapes in our bedroom. And it works really well with another new fave of mine...a nubbly navy chevron (which will ease Mr. H. into the floral drapes!) Might be spending some time in the car tomorrow because yes, I need. more. fabric. ....and I swear I'll get back to sewing one of these days. Soon. Tomorrow. Yes.

We snuck away to San Diego for a few days for a little end of summer mini-vacay-- and I really mean mini. Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning. A jam packed few days away is not exactly a vacation but it was a get-away so I'm not complaining. At the end of last week B mentioned to me that he was gong to be in San Diego on business on Monday and I of course sprung into action "ohhhh we could all go!!" {imagine Mr. H saying that in his trying-to-be-Mrs. H-voice. Always makes me laugh when he tries to talk like me!! The kids had a blast at Sea World and whale watching. Last night Brian I got the ultimate treat -- The royal treatment at a high end suhi restaurant. More sushi than we could imagine and we were beyond impressed!! If you are ever in San Diego, you MUST go to Ono Sushi. TDF!! So now I am home and trying to get back into the swing of things. And dreaming of a fun little project....

Do you die over this?? Thumb tack art!! Ah, yes please, especially in Miss O's room where she would like" peace and love" plastered all over the walls. So Chic!! My mom come in town at the end of this week.... Painting is on the horizon as is thumb tack art. And a date night with Mr. H. I'm refusing to eat anything but premier grade sushi from now on-- poor Mr. H. His date just got much more expensive :)

Intervention

Unless there is an intervention in my immediate future all of these ceramic stools will be making their way into my house shortly...more specifically our pool area. My jaw was on the floor when i saw them in the Anthro catalog. Color blocking is sooo in and I think this is a really great way to bring it into your home - or onto your patio. Luuurrve them. What do you think about color blocking Do you like it? I love it...as long s it is paired with something that has a pattern on it. You know me, that shouldn't be a surprise!

Today is Mr. H's 38th birthday. We met when he was 20 -- back in our college days -- I pretty much knew right away that he was my forever guy. We've had an amazing journey so far and life just keeps getting better.

How amazing are vintage Vogue covers? I DIE! Soooo want to figure out how to work them into my decor. How amaze would it be get them blown up really big and mod-podge them onto a set of drawers?? Sort of like wallpapering drawers-- but better. Hmmmm. anyone have suggestions on how I might do that??

We have a set of drawers that Brian and I inherited straight out of college and they have been with us ever since. I have painted and stripped them umpteen times. I'll never part with them. The first time I painted them I wrote B+S=TLA under on of the drawers. Keeping 4-eva'! They need a makeover though...a project like this might just be on the horizon. Which is totally what I need after spending the day yesterday feeling like I have wwaaay too much on my plate and wanting to simplify and move closer to family and to the country. Everything is a choice.....I choose to love vintage Vogue...and pile projects on my plate.

Botanika & The Bathroom

Blogging seems to be falling to the wayside this week. The girls are back and I have been dedicating a lot of time to doing fun things with them. Between that and getting orders out the door, something has to give...and here you have it -- No One of a Kind Wednesday post....and we'll see if the Inspiration Workshop post manages to squeeze it's way in today.

So, if I had another one of myself...what would I have shared for one of a kind Wednesday?? Custom, one of a kind towels I made for the girls bathroom...which is finally finished (minus the mirror which needs to be replaced with something else. With the addition of chair rail, the mirror is now a scosh too big. I refuse to pay full price from an online retailer and know what I want so am now playing a waiting game with Homegoods... we'll see how long that lasts. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to get a BIG box of Botanika from Paula Prass a week or so ago and let me tell you....LOVE!! love love love.

Could quite possibly by my favorite line of fabric eva' created! I want to wallpaper my house in it! lol. Anyway, it was a perfect fit for the girls bathroom, which I was in the middle of re-doing so I added some strips of fabric to the towels in their bathroom.

It was a very easy, very quick project and has a huge impact on the room! My type of project for sure! They are also really fun to make as gift...I often make them for the girls friends, with a strip of fabric and then applique their first initial on there. Pop it in a bag with a pair of flip flops and intsa- birthday present!! Maybe another tutorial is in order (who are we kidding...i can't even get my blog posts done with I'm supposed to!)

I'm missing my girls today-- a week is a long time! I've been thinking of a few fun things to do with them next week and a trip to Griffith Park might be in order. There as so many great things to do there - the observatory, botanical gardens and carousel and of course celeb spotting and then maybe a trip to the beach for dinner. LA is great (minus the traffic!)

One of my all time fave bags. I've been carrying shoulder bags for most of the summer and it was nice to have a clutch back in my hand....love the way that feels. Sort of like holding hands. (can you tell I heart bags!?) Something similar in the shop for you to hold hands with.

The Patchwork Tent Tutorial

Finally! The Patchwork Tent Tutorial is up and running! For today's One of a Kind Wednesday -- you can make your own one of a kind patchwork tent. (If you make one, will you please send me a photo! I'd love to see it!)

There is a little history behind this tutorial. It started here, on the lil' boo blue blog, where the beautiful and very talented Ashley posted a fantastic tutorial on her version of this tent from Grosgrain and Cakies....found here. (You should go check it out before you start as she has very clear photos and I -- well, not so much!) I pinned a photo of the tutorial and the girls got a hold of it-- and the pleas began! Sooooo, what's a mom to do on a summer day with two girls who "Have nothing to do!" We head on over to Lowe's to gather the supplies we need. BUT-- once the girls realize that the tents are not big enough for them to stand up in, they start the hunt for bigger and better. So, this one is for those of you who would prefer to make a tent almost twice the size of the tent you originally intended to make! You will need more than a few fabric scraps for this one! I decided to cut some corners and purchase a sheet set from target as it worked out cheaper than buying actual fabric and quicker that patchworking together a gazillion scraps!

A find and a cltuch

I've been so inspired by this photo of an outdoor room found over at Caitlin Creer {crazy inspiration over there! You must go see!) that I am on the quest to make our patio into something similar...but still with my style added to it.

The blue lattice is a must as is some form of stripes, some form or zebra, a geometric print and of course a sunburst mirror.

Yesterday I scored this table at a local thrift shop for $25! Made me sing just a little bit-- yes it did! And it is perfectly lit for photos of a new clutch - which is in the shop- and is a must have!! I cut a ton of new clutches yesterday. Sewing today in a quiet studio sans kids. We are heading home tomorrow. We've had a fabulous vacation but I am ready to get back to the usual rhythm of chaos {although I am home without the girls for a week so it will be a bit more of a self centered rhythm.} I have a completely indulgent day planned for Wednesday and a few home projects planned for the week including finishing up the girls bathroom and hopefully getting my window seat finished in the kitchen. Can't wait!

The first painting that has ever affected this thought in me "I need to save my money for that! " It is an original oil from Sarah Ashley Longshore. I HEART her Audrey Series...AMAZING! She is currently showing at Gallery Orange in New Orleans. You should keep up on the Gallery Orange facebook page-- it's a really easy way to broaden your art horizons. Tracy Gielbert is the owner of Gallery orange and has a perfect eye for all things beautiful and modern.

This print is from The Wheatfield on etsy. I really love the colors in it.

And of course one from the fabulous Anne Harwell. She's on of my all time faves.
